The history
When the war ended, wrecked German aircraft lay in fields and on the edges of airfields all over Europe, slowly stripped for parts and swallowed by the grass. Farmers worked around them, and children played on them.
This diorama imagines one of those afternoons. The war is over. A boy is playing in the field beside a broken Fw 190, and at the fence an older brother, or perhaps his father, waves or calls him home. The whole scene grew out of a single colour photograph of a wrecked Fw 190, black 3, lying in long grass with its engine exposed.
The build
The aircraft is made from what was left over after building Eduard’s 1/48 Fw 190 A-1, together with a detailed aftermarket engine I had bought for that kit by mistake and which turned out not to fit it. Rather than throwing either away, I turned them into a wreck: the exposed engine, the open cowling, the stripped panels and the chipped, faded paint. The figures probably came from Tamiya’s 1/48 Zero kit.
It won second place in the Dioramas category (Hobby/Standard, all entries) at the 8th Ölçekli Dünyalar model competition, held by the Modelcilik Kulübü Derneği on 6 and 7 May 2023.
