The history
The Sd.Kfz. 251, usually called the Hanomag after the firm that developed its running gear, was Germany’s standard armoured half-track. Some 15,000 to 16,000 were built by the end of the war in 1945, in more than twenty versions. The 251/1 was the basic one: an armoured carrier for a squad of panzergrenadiers, who could fight from the open top or dismount through the doors at the rear.
The diorama sets one on a town street in the summer of 1944. American infantry hold a sandbag barricade at a garden wall, while panzergrenadiers take cover behind their Hanomag.
The build
The half-track is Tamiya’s 1/35 Sd.Kfz. 251/1, and the German soldiers come from the same kit. The American infantry are Master Box’s U.S. Infantry, July 1944 set. Everything in the diorama, from the vehicle to the figures and the street, was painted with Tamiya acrylics. I built it in 2023.
Lesson learned: check the date before the paint
I built the half-track first, in the kit’s Russian Front 1942 scheme of German grey, and only later decided to put it into a 1944 scene. That does not quite work. As the kit’s own painting guide points out, from 1943 German vehicles were given dark yellow as their base colour, with olive green and red brown camouflage on top. A grey 251 on a street in the summer of 1944 is unlikely.
If I built this scene again, I would choose the period first and paint the vehicle for it, not the other way round. The same goes for the figures: the Master Box set is dated July 1944, so the vehicle beside them should belong to the same summer.
