The history

Jeeps were never designed as ambulances, but in Normandy they became one of the quickest ways to bring a wounded man back from the front line. Units fitted them with frames that held stretchers across the bonnet and over the rear, so that one small vehicle could carry two or more casualties along lanes and tracks where a proper ambulance could not go.

The photograph at the top shows one of them during Operation Bluecoat, south-east of Caumont, on 30 July 1944, bringing casualties back to a regimental aid post.

The plan

Italeri’s 1/35 Ambulance Jeep, boxed for D-Day, Normandy 1944, with decals for an American and a British version. It will be the next addition to the jeep family on this site.
