The history
The Avro Anson began as a small airliner and became one of the most useful aircraft of its time. The first production Anson flew on 31 December 1935, and it was the first RAF aircraft with a retractable undercarriage. Crews called it Faithful Annie, and more than 11,000 were built for maritime patrol, training and transport.
Turkey bought 25 Ansons under an agreement with the British government signed on 8 January 1940, to be paid off over twenty years at 4 per cent interest. Six arrived in 1940, former RAF aircraft that became 3201 to 3206 in Turkish service, and the rest followed in 1941.
They went to the 3rd Training Company of the Hava Okulu, the Turkish air force flying school, where they trained bomb aimers and machine gunners. The 1st and 3rd Air Regiments also flew them for instrument and bombing training. The Turkish Ansons were taken out of service in November 1946.
